What's included in the free weights category?
Free weights are any resistance you move through space without a fixed machine path: dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells and specialty bars, Olympic and bumper plates, and the racks and cages that support heavy barbell work. Pair them with an adjustable bench and you have the foundation of nearly every serious strength program.
Free weights vs. machines — which should I buy first?
If you're building from scratch and want the biggest return on investment, start with free weights. A barbell, plates, rack, and bench cover 90% of the movements that drive strength and muscle growth — squat, bench, deadlift, overhead press, rows, and more. Machines are fantastic complements for isolation and safe solo training, but free weights build the base.
What's a good starter free-weight setup for a home gym?
The classic build: a power rack or squat stand, a 45 lb Olympic barbell, 230–300 lb of bumper or Olympic plates, an adjustable bench, and a pair of adjustable or fixed dumbbells. Budget around $1,500–2,500 for a solid starter setup, or scale up with better steel and commercial-rated gear.
What weight capacity should I look for?
For most home users, a 1,000 lb-rated bar and rack covers you for life — even advanced lifters rarely exceed 700 lb on any single lift. Commercial facilities should look for 1,500+ lb rack ratings and competition-grade barbells (like our Homegrown Lifting USA line) that can handle heavy daily use from multiple lifters.
How much flooring do I need under free weights?
If you're deadlifting or dropping loaded bars, you need at least ¾-inch rubber flooring (we carry interlocking rubber and foam mats) over concrete. For platforms, 1-inch horse stall mats or dedicated lifting platforms protect both the floor and your plates. If you're in an apartment or upstairs room, use bumper plates only — iron plates on a wood subfloor is a recipe for damage.
