Frequently asked questions
Loop bands, tube bands, or mini bands — what's the difference?
Loop bands (continuous loops, 41 in long) are the versatile all-purpose choice — great for assisted pull-ups, banded squats, and mobility work. Tube bands have handles on the ends — ideal for curls, rows, presses, and DIY cable-style exercises. Mini bands (short loops, 9–12 in) are for glute activation, lateral walks, and warm-ups. Most home gyms eventually accumulate all three types.
What resistance level should I start with?
Loop bands come in color-coded tension levels, usually light (10–20 lb), medium (25–50 lb), heavy (50–80 lb), and extra-heavy (100+ lb). Buy a multi-pack set that includes light, medium, and heavy — you'll use all three for different exercises. For assisted pull-ups, start with medium; for banded squats and deadlifts, start with heavy.
Can resistance bands replace weights?
For many exercises, yes — especially for travel or as a supplement. Bands offer variable resistance (harder at the end of the range of motion, easier at the start), which is a different training stimulus than constant-weight free weights. Both have a place in a well-rounded program. Bands alone won't build maximum strength like heavy weights, but they're excellent for hypertrophy, rehab, and mobility.
How long do resistance bands last?
6 months to 3 years, depending on use, storage, and quality. Bands stored in direct sunlight or used outdoors degrade fastest (UV destroys latex). Keep them in a drawer or closet, and inspect before heavy lifts like banded squats — snapped bands can cause injury. Expect to replace frequently-used bands annually.
Are bands safe for assisted pull-ups?
Yes — but attach carefully. Loop the band over a sturdy pull-up bar, put your knee or foot in the loop, and control the descent. Never let a stretched band snap back uncontrolled — keep tension throughout. A medium or heavy band gives roughly 40–80 lb of assistance, letting most beginners complete several clean pull-ups.
