Frequently asked questions
What size gym bag do I need?
Small (20–30L): gym clothes, shoes, water bottle — for daily gym commutes. Medium (30–50L): adds room for shower gear, post-workout meal, or longer gym days. Large (50L+): full sports bags for CrossFit (lifting shoes, chalk, straps, knee sleeves, multiple outfits) or overnight travel. Most users land in the 30–40L range.
Duffel vs. backpack — which is better for the gym?
Duffels open wide for fast packing/unpacking, fit more awkwardly-shaped gear (lifting shoes, foam roller), and look more traditional. Backpacks distribute weight better on longer walks or bike commutes, are easier to wear with a jacket, and have better organization (laptop sleeves, tech pockets). For commuter use, backpacks win; for pure gym use, duffels are more practical.
Do gym bags have separate shoe compartments?
Most mid- and higher-tier bags have dedicated ventilated shoe compartments — a must-have feature. Keeps smelly gym shoes and sweaty clothes from contaminating the rest of your gear. If a bag doesn't have this, consider whether you can add a mesh shoe bag as an alternative.
Is waterproofing important?
Somewhat — water-resistant (not waterproof) is enough for most users. Protects against a spilled water bottle or light rain on the way from car to gym. Fully waterproof bags cost more and are overkill unless you commute on a bike in heavy weather or bring wet swim gear home.
What material holds up best over time?
Ballistic nylon and 1000-denier polyester are the workhorses — durable, water-resistant, and affordable. Leather looks premium but shows wear fast and requires maintenance. Canvas is classic but absorbs sweat and odors over time. For a 3–5 year bag, stick with heavy-denier synthetic materials.
