Frequently asked questions

What is a preacher curl bench?

A preacher curl bench has an angled arm pad that locks your upper arms in place, isolating the biceps during curl movements. The angled pad (usually 30°–60°) prevents cheating and forces strict form. It's the gold-standard movement for peak-contraction bicep development — especially the long head of the biceps. Used with a barbell, EZ bar, or dumbbells.

Preacher bench vs. bicep curl machine — which is better?

A bicep curl machine uses a weight stack and cammed resistance — consistent tension through the full range, easy drop sets, no weight plates needed. A preacher bench uses free weights (barbell, EZ bar, dumbbells) — more versatile, cheaper, and works your stabilizers more. For most home gyms, a preacher bench is the smarter buy because it's cheap and unlocks multiple exercise variations.

Do I need an EZ curl bar for a preacher bench?

Not required, but highly recommended. The angled grips of an EZ curl bar reduce wrist strain compared to a straight bar in the pronated position preacher curls put you in. Dumbbells also work great for unilateral preacher curls (one arm at a time). Straight barbells are fine too, but many lifters find them harder on the wrists.

Is the seat and pad height adjustable?

On commercial models, yes — adjustable seat height matches the pad to your arm length for proper elbow positioning. Budget models often have a fixed seat, which can make the bench uncomfortable or ineffective if you're significantly taller or shorter than average. If you're between 5'6" and 6'2", most fixed-seat preacher benches will work fine.

Can I use a preacher bench for anything besides biceps?

Some preacher benches include a seat that doubles as a triceps extension station (using the arm pad to brace the shoulders instead of elbows) or supports wrist curls and concentration curls. A few combo benches integrate with adjustable benches or attach to racks. Primary use case is still biceps, but the versatility adds value.
