Frequently asked questions
What is red light therapy and what's it supposed to do?
Red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy) uses red (630–700nm) and near-infrared (800–900nm) light wavelengths to penetrate skin and underlying tissues. Research supports benefits for skin health, wound healing, joint pain reduction, and some muscle recovery effects. Many other marketing claims (hair growth, fat loss, testosterone boost) have weaker or mixed evidence.
Does red light therapy actually work?
For some applications, yes — with realistic expectations. Solid evidence: skin improvements (wrinkles, wound healing, acne), reduction in joint and muscle pain, and some hair regrowth effects. Weaker evidence: muscle recovery, fat loss, performance enhancement. Effects are modest, not dramatic. Benefits require consistent use (several sessions per week for weeks to months).
Panel size — do I need a full-body panel or a targeted device?
Targeted devices (handheld wands, face masks, small panels) work for specific areas — faces, joints, or localized issues. Affordable and portable. Full-body panels ($500–3,000+) cover whole-body treatment, saving time for users who want general benefits. For most users, a medium-sized panel (300–600 LEDs, covering torso-sized area) is the best value.
What specs should I look for in a panel?
Three key specs: wavelengths (both red ~660nm and near-infrared ~850nm — look for dual-chip or dual-mode panels), irradiance (mW/cm² at 6 inches — aim for 30+ for effective dosing at reasonable distances), and LED count and quality (more LEDs usually means more coverage). Watch for misleading irradiance claims — measured at the LED surface vs. at treatment distance produces wildly different numbers.
Are there any safety concerns?
Generally very safe — red and near-infrared light are non-ionizing (unlike UV) and don't cause cancer or sunburn. Main cautions: don't stare directly into panels (eye protection recommended), avoid use over cancer sites unless cleared by a doctor, and be cautious with photosensitizing medications. People with light-sensitive conditions (lupus, certain medications) should consult a doctor.
How long are sessions and how often?
Typical protocol: 10–20 minutes per session, 3–5 times per week at a distance of 6–12 inches from the panel. Daily use is generally safe but not necessarily more effective — "more" isn't always better with red light. Most users see skin and recovery benefits within 4–8 weeks of consistent use.
