California Prop 65

California's Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn California consumers about significant exposure to chemicals that the State of California has found can cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Why Some Fitness Equipment Carries a Warning

Many materials used in fitness equipment, such as rubber, vinyl, upholstery, metal coatings and electrical components, can contain listed chemicals. Manufacturers may label a product with a Proposition 65 warning even when exposure is expected to be low. As the State of California notes, a warning does not by itself mean a product is unsafe.

What a Warning Looks Like

Warnings name at least one listed chemical and follow a standard format, for example:

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including [chemical name], which is known to the State of California to cause cancer. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Warnings may appear on the product, its packaging or its manual.
