Frequently asked questions
What are yoga bolsters for?
Bolsters are firm, elongated cushions used for support — most commonly in restorative yoga, yin yoga, prenatal yoga, and meditation. They support the spine in backbends, open the chest in heart-openers, support the knees in savasana, and provide comfortable seated meditation. Essential for restorative and yin practice; nice-to-have for active styles.
Rectangular or round bolster?
Rectangular bolsters: more versatile — work for spine support, under-knee support, and chest opening. The most common first purchase. Round (cylindrical) bolsters: better for specific poses — under the knees, between the knees in side-lying, and spinal twists. Most serious practitioners own one of each. If picking one, go rectangular.
What filling is best?
Cotton-filled bolsters: traditional, firm, long-lasting, somewhat heavy. Buckwheat hull-filled: heavier, contours to body better, but can shift over time. Kapok or synthetic fill: lighter, softer, fluffier — more comfortable but less supportive. For restorative yoga, firmer fill (cotton or buckwheat) works better than soft fill.
Do I really need a bolster?
For restorative yoga or yin yoga, yes — folded blankets don't substitute well. For active yoga styles (Vinyasa, Ashtanga), bolsters are occasional-use items, so a folded blanket or firm pillow may suffice. Many people buy bolsters after starting restorative classes and realizing how much better the practice feels with proper support.
How do I clean a bolster?
Most bolsters have removable, washable covers — unzip, machine wash cold, air dry. The inner stuffing is not machine-washable; wipe with a damp cloth if needed and sun-air occasionally. Look for bolsters specifically advertising removable covers — cheap bolsters often have sewn-in covers that can't be cleaned thoroughly.
