Frequently asked questions
Why buy a flat bench instead of an adjustable one?
Three reasons: stability (no moving parts means rock-solid under heavy load), price (flat benches are often half the cost of comparable FID benches), and space (lower profile, often lighter to move). For lifters who primarily flat bench, DB press, and do rows, a dedicated flat bench is often the smarter buy. Add a separate adjustable bench later if needed.
What weight capacity should a flat bench have?
Because flat benches have no moving joints, they can handle much higher loads than adjustable benches at similar price points. Look for 600–1,000 lb capacity minimum for home use, and 1,000+ lb for commercial. Many flat benches exceed 1,500 lb — ideal for heavy benchers who don't want any flex under the bar.
What pad length do I need?
Standard flat bench pads are 48–54 inches long. Taller lifters (6'2"+) should look for 54+ inch pads so your head, shoulders, and glutes all stay supported. If you'll use the bench for DB flys (arms out to the sides), a narrower pad (10–11 in) gives better shoulder mobility than wider (12+ in) pads.
Are flat benches good for dumbbell work?
Yes — flat benches are excellent for dumbbell press, DB rows, skull crushers, and bench-supported work. The fixed flat surface is more stable than any adjustable bench at flat, which makes heavy DB presses feel solid. The one limitation: no incline options, so you'll need a separate setup for incline DB work.
How low should the pad sit?
Most flat benches have pad heights of 17–18 inches — the standard that matches commercial gym benches. Very tall or very short lifters sometimes prefer custom heights. Extra-low benches (15–16 inches) give a slightly longer press range of motion but can make foot planting awkward. The 17-inch standard works for 95% of lifters.
