Frequently asked questions

Plate tree vs. wall-mounted plate storage — which is better?

Plate trees are freestanding, typically hold 300–600 lb on 4–6 pegs, and move with your gym. Wall-mounted storage (like the PRx Weight Plate Storage) uses zero floor space but requires stud or concrete mounting. For most home gyms, a tree is the right choice. For permanent commercial installations, wall mounts are cleaner.

How many pegs do I need?

Rule of thumb: one peg per plate size pair you own. If you have 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5 lb plates, you need at least 6 pegs. Many trees organize by size from bottom to top (heaviest at bottom). Trees with 8+ pegs accommodate future plate additions without running out of space.

Olympic vs. standard plate tree — what's the difference?

Olympic plate trees have 2-inch diameter pegs to fit Olympic plates (the modern standard on nearly all our plates). Standard plate trees have 1-inch pegs for older-style home gym plates. Check your plate hole size before buying — these aren't interchangeable. Nearly every plate tree we sell is Olympic spec.

Should I get a plate tree with wheels?

For a shared or commercial gym, yes — wheeled plate trees let staff reposition storage for cleaning or different class setups. For home use, fixed trees are fine. Wheels add cost and slightly reduce stability, so don't pay for them if you don't need the mobility.

Do bumper plates fit on standard plate trees?

Yes — bumper plates have the same 2-inch Olympic hole as iron plates, so they fit standard Olympic plate trees. However, bumper plates are thicker, so you fit fewer per peg. For a heavy bumper plate collection, look for trees with longer pegs (12+ inches) or add a dedicated bumper plate tree.

Can I mount plate storage directly to my rack?

Most commercial racks accept plate horns (weight posts that bolt onto the rack uprights). This is the most space-efficient storage option since it uses the rack's vertical real estate. Check that the horns are compatible with your rack's upright size (usually 2×2 or 3×3 inch) and hole pattern. See our rack accessories section.
