Frequently asked questions

What is a weight sled and what does it train?

A weight sled is a weighted frame on metal skids (or wheels) that you push, pull, or drag. It's the most functional strength-and-conditioning tool available — builds lower-body power, acceleration, grip strength, and cardiovascular conditioning with nearly zero injury risk. Used by athletes, strongmen, football coaches, and military training.

How much weight should I start with?

Start with just the empty sled (usually 30–90 lb) plus 45–90 lb of added plates for most users. Beginners should focus on technique and speed rather than max load. For heavy prowler work, advanced athletes push 200–400+ lb. Always warm up with an unloaded sled first.

What surface do I need for a sled?

Turf is ideal — most commercial gyms have a dedicated turf lane for sleds. Smooth concrete or asphalt works (though sleds wear faster on rough concrete). Grass works outdoors but slows the sled significantly. Don't use sleds on wood, tile, or rubber flooring — skids gouge these surfaces fast.

How much space do I need for sled work?

A minimum of 30 ft of clear linear space for meaningful push/pull distance. Commercial facilities usually have 40–60 ft turf lanes. If indoor space is limited, try a back-and-forth 15 ft lane or an outdoor driveway. Home users with small spaces sometimes use sleds only for heavy weight transfer rather than long-distance conditioning.

Prowler vs. push sled vs. drag sled — what's the difference?

Prowlers have high and low handles for pushing — classic athletic training tool. Drag sleds have a harness or rope attachment for pulling — trains posterior chain and running mechanics. Many commercial sleds combine both — push handles plus harness attachment points. For a single purchase, a combo sled is the most versatile.
