Frequently asked questions
Medicine ball, slam ball, wall ball, or D-ball — what's the difference?
Medicine balls are firm, leather or rubber-covered, and bounce slightly — for throws, rotations, and partner drills. Slam balls are dense, filled with sand or rubber pellets, and don't bounce — designed to be slammed hard into the ground. Wall balls are softer, larger, and designed to be thrown high against a wall (CrossFit standard). D-balls (dead balls) are heavy (60–150+ lb) used for over-shoulder throws and strongman training.
What weight should I start with?
Depends on exercise and gender. Women typically start with 6–10 lb for most throws and rotations. Men typically start with 14–20 lb. Slam balls for training usually run 20–30 lb for men, 10–15 lb for women. Wall balls are usually fixed at 14 lb (women) and 20 lb (men) to match CrossFit RX standards.
Can I slam a medicine ball?
No — traditional medicine balls will split open if slammed hard. Buy a dedicated slam ball for slamming movements. Slam balls are engineered to take repeated impact without deforming or breaking. Medicine balls are for controlled throws, catches, and partner work only.
How many weight balls does a gym need?
For a home gym, one slam ball (15–30 lb) and one medicine ball (8–12 lb) covers nearly everything. For commercial facilities running group fitness, plan for a set — 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 lb in both slam and wall ball styles, plus a few heavier D-balls for strength-focused members.
Where should I store weight balls?
In a dedicated weight ball rack — floor storage creates trip hazards and balls roll during workouts. Most commercial ball racks hold 6–12 balls in a compact 3–4 ft footprint. For outdoor or wet environments, rubber-coated balls hold up better than leather.
