Yoga & Pilates Mats

3mm (travel mat): lightweight and portable, minimal cushioning — for experienced practitioners. 5–6mm (standard): the best all-around thickness for most practice styles. 8mm (thick/cushioned): extra padding for sensitive joints or restorative practice, but harder to balance in standing poses. Most home users do best with a 5–6mm mat.

PVC: cheapest, most durable, but not eco-friendly. TPE (thermoplastic elastomer): PVC alternative — lighter, more eco-friendly, similar grip. Natural rubber: best grip especially when wet, biodegradable, but heavier and has a rubber smell initially. Cork: naturally antimicrobial, unique texture, requires light moisture for grip — popular for hot yoga. Rubber and cork are premium choices.

Strongly recommended. Sweat destroys grip on standard PVC mats — look specifically for "hot yoga" or "non-slip when wet" mats. Natural rubber and cork mats excel here. Some practitioners also use a yoga towel over the mat for additional sweat absorption and grip. Mats designed for hot yoga cost $60–120 but are essential for the practice.

Light cleaning (after each use): wipe down with a damp cloth and air dry. Deeper cleaning (weekly or biweekly): mix mild soap with water, wipe both sides, rinse gently, and hang dry. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or the washing machine — these destroy mat materials. Specialty yoga mat sprays work well but aren't required.
